Alexander Hepple was born in Johannesburg in 1904. He was a member of the Transvaal Provincial Council for five years and of the South African Parliament for ten years. A lifelong member of the South African Labour Party, he was elected leader in 1953. He is the author of a political and economic history of South Africa and has published several pamphlets on trade unionism and censorship and press control. He was editor of the Labour newspaper Forward and has contributed numerous articles to various newspapers and magazines on political and trade-union affairs.
