Black
Consciousness and June 16

The
appeals of being, acting, and thinking Black gained most of its support
in the secondary schools and universities. On 13 June 1976, the South
African Students Movement (SASM)
Action Committee which was later
renamed the Soweto Students Representative Council (SSRC) which assumed
leadership of the many events after June 1976. The role played by
the BC in the Soweto revolt has not been adequately analysed. However
the heroism displayed by the young schoolchildren was indicative
of a psychological preparedness for confrontation with White South
Africa. It marked the emergence of BC as a revolutionary consciousness
which galvanized Black student action across the country.
