History of Indians in South Africa
Bazaars, Ghettoes and Townships
The history of why and where Indian, Coloured, Chinese and Black communities were settled, in South Africa, is a fascinating study of the formation of racial attitudes as a result of the deliberate policy of segregation and apartheid. The racial residential patterns of our cities and land ownership were the bedrock of the creation of a white state in southern Africa.
Residential segregation was synonymous with racial classification and pass laws, land and group areas legislation. More importantly, the removal of nearly 80% of Indian, Coloured, Chinese and African, urban and rural, communities led to the destruction of the cohesive fibre of these historically settled communities.
In the coming months, SAHO will look at the evolution of towns, cities and the creation of local communities in South Africa.
We welcome contributions, from individuals, to send us historical information about individuals, families, communities, towns and local community organisations.
