Grassroots, a community newspapers was launched in 1980 as a vehicle to ‘voice of the voiceless’. The paper was made up of 60 democratic organisations such as the Western Cape Western Cape Civic Association (WCCA), Cape Housing Action Committee (CAHAC), women's and youth organisations, the youth under Cape Youth Congress (CAYCO), trade unions and the UDF. The government launched an attack on the paper, for instance eight months after the newspaper was launched, the papers’ first organiser Johnny Issel was banned. Grassroots which was published once a month continued to operate until 1990.
