29 August 1999
A US registered Lear jet 35 Aircraft was shot to ground by Ethiopian military forces. The incident claimed the life of the two occupants of the Jet. The plane was en route from Naples, Italy, to Johannesburg, South Africa, via Egypt for repair. The Ethiopian authorities advanced reasons for the cause of the incident. They asserted that the jet flew into the country's no-fly zone, which was near the border with Eritrea. The pilot also failed to come to contact with the Ethiopian Air Traffic Control (ATC) ten minutes before entering Ethiopian airspace, a requirement set by an Ethiopian-issued Notice To Airmen.
