29 March 1990
The African National Congress (ANC) called off a peace rally to be held with Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) scheduled for 2 April in KwaZulu-Natal. The local ANC executive organiser convinced the ANC national executive that in view of hostility between the two rival parties, which had claimed more than forty lives in the preceding weeks, a joint rally would pose a serious security problem. The ANC's move was described as a setback to a possible peace settlement.
