26 January 1999
Chairperson of the South African Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Judge Johann Kriegler, resigned from his position two years after the Commission's establishment. Kriegler cited his protracted dispute with the government over finances and control of the IEC and the administration of elections as reasons. He was temporarily replaced by his deputy, Dr Brigalia Bam, until she was appointed permanently to the position by President Nelson Mandela.
