The Citizen reported on details of Justice Tom van Reenen's report on alleged irregularities in the awarding of housing contracts in the Transkei. The report contained several alleged housing irregularities committed by the Matanzima brothers, Kaizer and George, and other officials and indicated that central government officials may have been aware of some aspects of the irregular deals, but decided to turn a blind eye. It also described how 1 884 tractors from Austria had been bought, resulting in an exchange loss of R30m. Of these tractors, 224 had not been accounted for and some had been sold at bargain prices to the Matanzimas and their friends, as reported by the Sunday Star on July 24. The Matanzima brothers allegedly blocked opposition to their unscrupulous/shady business dealings by barring all competitive business. References: South African Institute of Race Relations. (1989).
