Dorothy Nyembe, a prominent political activist in KwaZulu-Natal who participated in many political demonstrations against the apartheid regime and led the Cato Manor protests, was released from jail with her political spirit still intact. After her release she became an active member of the Natal Organisation of Women (NOW), a community organisation fighting against rent increases, transport costs, poor education and lack of child care facilities. She passed away on 17 December 1998.
