Neville Edward Alex ander is a well-known political activist and academic. He was born on 22 October 1936 in Cradock, Eastern Cape. He went on to complete three university degrees in History and German at the University of Cape Town. He received his PhD in 1961 from a university in Tübingen, Germany.

In 1962, became a founding member of the Yu Chi Chan Club (YCCC) along with Dulcie September. This was an organization aimed at guerilla warfare. In 1962, after the YCCC was disbanded, he founded the National Liberation Front (NLF). The aim of the NLF was to unite South Africans for the common goal of overthrowing the apartheid state.

In 1963, Alexander was arrested along with the other members of the NLF and was imprisoned on Robben Island for 10 years. Upon his release, he did extensive work on language policy and planning in South Africa. He is the recipient of the Lingua Pax Prize for his contribution to the promotion of multilingualism in post-apartheid South Africa.
