The Herschel School opens in Claremont, Cape Town. It is named after Sir John Frederick William Herschel, British astronomer and scholar, who stayed in South Africa from 1834-1838, and whose research marked the beginning of a new epoch in the astronomy of the Southern Hemisphere.
