Lillian Ngoyi dies
Lillian Ngoyi.

A well-known political activist, Lillian Ngoyi, died at the age of 68 at her home in Soweto, still serving her banning order. Ngoyi was subjected to harassment, imprisonment and banning orders by the Apartheid regime. She was the first president of the ANC Women's League, first woman to be elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC and a leader during the 1956 Women's March to the Union Buildings. Ngoyi was buried in Soweto. Her funeral was attended by more than 2000 mourners. The first of South Africa's four new environmental protection vessels, a 47-metre patrol ship, was named after her in 2004.
