Prime Minister B.J. Vorster officially opened the South African Navy's R15m Maritime Operational and Communications Headquarters at Silvermine, West Lake, near Simonstown, Cape Peninsula. The modern Advokaat naval communications system at the base, from where the operational command and control of maritime forces was exercised, was constructed by the South African Defence Force with the help of several West German companies.
