Sundowns FC midfielder, Mpho Gift Leremi died in a car accident on 03 September 2007 after losing control of his car in Brackensdowns, next to Alberton. He was returning from a CAF Confederation Cup game against Cameroon when the accident happened. Leremi suffered grave injuries that subsequently caused his death. Leremi was discovered in 1999 and was signed by Orlando Pirates as a teenager. He played for Pirates until 2007 when he moved to Sundowns. Leremi was a talented player, who captained the Pirates team and helped them win the 2002-2003season. He was described by then Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhenkesi stofile as the only player who could score a goal with his left and right boot.
