National Housing Department Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, introduced a new housing plan to the media. The plan had been endorsed by the cabinet and entailed the government's intention to eliminate informal housing structures within a timeframe of ten years. The minister further indicated that the current housing-subsidy would be replaced by a full subsidy of R25, 800 to the very poor, unemployed and the elderly. Statistics had shown an appalling state of affairs with about 2.4 million households living in informal structures around the country and with 800 000 on housing-subsidy waiting lists.
