Nelson Mandela is elected ANC president

After a triumphant global tour Nelson Mandela was unanimously elected as president of the African National Congress (ANC) at the party's national conference held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on 5 July 1991. Mandela succeeded the ailing Oliver Tambo, who was elected national chairperson.
Walter Sisulu was elected as the deputy president. Other people elected to the first five top positions were Cyril Ramaphosa as ANC Secretary-General, with Jacob Zuma becoming his deputy. Thomas Nkobi retained his post as Treasurer General.
