In a letter to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), lawyers for the National Party (NP) demand an unconditional apology from chairman Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the resignation of vice-chairman Dr. Alex Boraine who had also publicly criticised Former State President F. W. De Klerk. This came after Dr. Boraine learned from the State Security Council document that government ordered the elimination of state opponents. De Klerk, in his earlier applications to the TRC, rejected claims that the pre-1994 governments ordered the murder of anti-apartheid activists. Because the State Security Council was under the presidency, Dr. Boraine asked De Klerk if he had weighed the possibility of applying for amnesty. A deadline of 4 June was set for his response. The date was later extended to 20 June 1997. NP's demands were rejected.
