The International Olympic games, which were held in Athens, Greece, came to an end with a spectacular closing ceremony. The evening was started off with Greek music, dance and fireworks before the flame was extinguished and the flag lowered. The overall winner of the 2004 Games was the United States with 103 medals, followed by Russia with 92 and China, which is set to host the next Olympic competitions in 2008, with 63 medals. South Africa managed to win six medals, including one gold. The president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, praised Athens in a closing speech for the well organised Games.
