South African foreign minister, Pik Botha, visits the Soviet Union, where he re-established consular relations which had been severed in 1956. Though the visit was unofficial Botha managed to meet his counterpart, Boris Pankin, and Eduard Shevardnadze, who replaced Pankin twelve days after the visit.
