John Dube.
Date: 11 February, 1946
The Rev. Langalibalele Dube dies in Umhlanga, Natal, a day before his 75th birthday. Of Zulu royal blood, Dube was founder and first editor of the Zulu newspaper Ilanga lase Natal (now Ilanga), first Chairperson of the ANC, and the first black person to receive a D.Phil. (honoris causa) from a South African University. Read his petition to the British government in 1914 for greater black representation and an extract from "A Talk Upon My Native Land".
