3 April 1997
Roelf Meyer, former chief negotiator of the National Party during the multi-party peace negotiations, met with Bantu Holomisa, former leader of the Transkei Military Government and later deputy minister of environment and tourism in the Government of National Unity, to discuss the formation of a new political movement. Botha and Holomisa, the latter who had been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) after accusing a top party official of corruption, teamed up to launch a new party called the United Democratic Movement (UDM) on 27 September 1997. In later years Meyer resigned his position and left politics completely to pursue other interests, while Holomisa continued to lead the party.
