SA celebrates its first National Women's Day
Women matching to Pretoria
Date: 9 August, 1995
Shortly after the advent of democracy, South Africa celebrated its first National Women's Day. This occurred thirty-nine years after 20 000 women across the colour line marched to the Union Buildings, Pretoria, to hand a petition against the Pass Laws to Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom. This day had been declared a public holiday in 1994. The month August has since been declared National Women's Month.
