South Africa readmitted to United Nations

For South Africa this date signaled the end of decades of international isolation . The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) recalled resolution 48/258 A and adopted by consensus an invitation to SA to resume its participation in the activities of the General Assembly. The Assembly expressed satisfaction at the successful holding of elections in April 1994 in South Africa, the establishment of the Government of National Unity and the adoption of a non-racial and democratic constitution for the transitional period. The credentials of the South African delegation were approved and SA was welcomed back after an absence of nearly thirty years. The meeting also decided not to hold SA liable for contributions relating to the period from 30 September 1974 to 23 June 1994.
