The South African History Online non-profit organisation's website began operations on 22 January 2001. CEO Omar Badsha founded the organisation as a Section 21 non-profit and launched its website two years later. Since then SAHO has popularised history in South Africa and become the largest independent history education and research institute in the country.
SAHO has developed partnerships with educational institutions, museums, archives, heritage programs and other history projects to foster the study and teaching of South African history. Book publications, art exhibitions, cultural festivals and additional websites have developed through SAHO’s initiation and promotion.
For fourteen years SAHO has been committed to the promotion of historical study, free expression and open access to knowledge. SAHO continues to work to strengthen research and education in the field of history, in order to promote societal understanding and social justice within South Africa and beyond.
