Zwelakhe Sisulu was a prominent journalist in the apartheid era who fought for justice and freedom. Sisulu was the founder and editor of the New Nation newspaper. He also founded the Media Workers Association of South Africa (MWASA). He was the third son of African National Congress (ANC) leaders, Walter and Albertina Sisulu. In 1981 he was arrested under the Terrorism Act, detained without trial, tortured and released after 251 days. Five years later, on 27 June 1986, when he was the editor of the New Nation, Sisulu was abducted at his home in Soweto, Johannesburg,by four armed White men who wore balaclavas to conceal their identities. It later emerged that Sisulu had been detained. This was confirmed by the then Minister of Law and Order, Adriaan Vlok. However the Minister denied that the police were masked when they abducted Sisulu but was arrested for “endangering and undermining the maintenance of public order”   and was only released 721 days later on 2 December 1988.
