Thabo Mngomeni, former Bafana Bafana player and Orlando Pirates midfield player, who was awarded Kick Off's accolade for the Goal of the Decade for his goal for Bush Bucks in 1997, is born in Cape Town. Mngomeni once captained the mighty Orlando Pirates but was let go in 2002 and eventually sought employment with Hellenic. An ankle injury in the same year saw his career come to an end. His career was plagued by controversies. He was once suspended for six months for assaulting a referee and also telling a journalist, while in camp with Bafana Bafana in Zimbabwe, that he used to play most of his matches under the influence of dagga. Mngomeni was also embroiled in a contractual dispute with Hellenic over non-payment of a signing fee and salary for a certain period. Mgomeni has currently set his sights on becoming a coach.
