17 February 1998
The Zimbabwean golfer Tony Johnstone ended a six-year drought on the European Tour when he won the £400,000 Alfred Dunhill PGA golf tournament in Houghton, Johannesburg. Johnstone managed to hold himself against the local hero Ernie Els to take the title by two shots as the tournament entered its fifth day as a result of rain and poor light. Johnstone's victory was overshadowed by the disqualification of the Australian world number two, Greg Norman. Norman informed tournament officials that he would not be returning to the field because of a meeting scheduled with George Bush, former president of the USA, to discuss the President's Cup tournament and left South Africa in his private jet.
