16 November 2005
Hendrik Truman Prince is a South African politician and the former mayor of the Beaufort West Local Municipality. Since 2005, Prince's political career has been marked by controversy. On 16 November 2005, he was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing into his conduct during a council meeting. A separate hearing was held for Prince in the same year regarding his involvement in soliciting underage prostitutes, which was caught on tape and aired on the investigative journalism show, Special Assignment. Calls for the African National Congress (ANC) to take disciplinary action against Prince came not only from various political parties, but also from the South African public. Prince was subsequently charged for assaulting the Special Assignment team. Amongst the above-mentioned charges brought against Prince, he was also accused of using R3 000 from the mayoral fund to pay for the bail of his friend Harry van Rooyen, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment for armed robbery. Having been removed from his position as ANC manager, Prince was reinstated in 2007. He was however, expelled from the ANC and joined a political party known as Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa). Two members of Icosa have since referred to Prince as a "hooligan", one of which happens to be a convicted rapist, and the other who was suspended for having defrauded his council of R57, 000.
