Tutu threatens to quit TRC

Following the refusal by the African National Congress (ANC) to seek amnesty for its past human rights abuses, Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Archbishop Desmond Tutu, threatens to resign. Tutu was appointed to head the TRC on 29 November 1995. Tutu went on record to say that the ANC's refusal to cooperate is defeating the whole process of reconciliation and he sees no reason for him to lead something, of which the ruling party has no regard for. On 10 November 1996, he met with the ANC delegation and concluded that all anti-apartheid activists should apply for amnesty. However, the ANC still maintained that reconciliation does not require its members to justify measures taken against the apartheid government.
