United Nations World Summit starts The United Nations World Summit started at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. The Millennium Summit was the biggest ever for world leaders. It tackled challenges brought about by issues ranging from disarmament and militarisation of outer space to the environment, poverty and globalisation. The live Webcast in English and French featured on the United Nations Web site, which also made available the texts of statements in their original language, press releases, radio news programmes and photographs, along with background information regarding the summit. A live webcam view from the United Nations building was available. The summit brought together more than 150 heads of governments, including South African President Thabo Mbeki, who delivered his five minute speech on 7 September.
