Winnie Mandela is elected ANCWL president

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, estranged wife of Nelson Mandela, made a triumphant return to the top level of the African National Congress (ANC), when the African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) elected her as its president, which automatically guaranteed her a position within the National Executive Committee (NEC), the ANC's highest decision making body.
