Born Nomzamo Winfreda Zanyiwe Madikizela in the Eastern Cape, President Mandela’s former wife and politician was elected President of the African National Congress’ Women’s League (ANCWL) on 8 December 1993. The election came just a year after she resigned from all ANC leadership posts, including her post as Member of Parliament. She was re-elected in 1997. Madikizela- -Mandela is widely respected within the ANC, securing 5th place in the 2009 general election. She is one of the most recognised faces of the struggle agaisnt apartheid. Several productions depicting her life have been made over the years. The most recent is a film based on Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography of her, Winnie Mandela: A Life.
