Xhosa war hero Maqoma dies on Robben Island
Xhosa hero Maqoma
Date: 9 September, 1873
Xhosa war hero and regent of the AmaNgqika (Gaika) Xhosa clan during the youth of Sandile, Maqoma (also spelt Makoma or Macoma) died on Robben Island. He was captured during the Eighth Frontier War (War of Mlangeni) 1850-1853 and banished to Robben Island.
In 1869 he was released but was sent back to Robben Island in 1871. He was a respected political leader and renowned orator.
