Minister of Social Development of the Republic of South Africa since 17 June 1999, Dr Zola Sidney Themba Skweyiya, was born in Simonstown. Skweyiya is the former Minister of Public Service and Administration. He has worked tirelessly to eradicate corruption by members of his department who were enriching themselves with social grants meant for the poor and children. Under his leadership nearly 10 million South Africans are receiving state grants. Skweyiya is also credited with the creation of the South African Social Security Agency, a body to oversee the smooth running of social grants in order to avoid discrepancies that could make it possible for the system to be abused.
