Moses Buthelezi

Aged 22 at the time of his Swan award, Moses Buthelezi was at high school in KwaMashu and had limited formal art training apart from some part-time study at the Community Arts Workshop in Durban.

His pen and ink drawing Trouble in Bus Service was done in pointilist style and achieved by using thousands of dots. In an interview with Bronwyn AdamsoftheSunday Tribune after the award, he indicated that the development of his distinctive style was cleverly deliberate:

"I didn't think I would win but I was determined to try - that is why I developed a pointilist style. Nobody does pointilism in the South African context as I do. When I started painting in 1986 I was doing what everyone else was doing. I decided I would only progress if my paintings were completely original. My eider brother, who was an art lecturer at a high school, offered to teach me poin-tilism and it was then that I developed my technique."

With his award Moses had hopes of furthering his art training when he matriculated, which he did at the end of 1992. His decision to undertake a technical course was sensible, and will hopefully improve his financial position and further his artistic career.

Many young artists with whom the Art Centre has worked, who have talent and achieve a little financial reward, believe that this should lead to full-time study at a formal art school. Unfortunately, that is often not practical because the costs are so high, few bursaries are available and their parents are often poor.
