2. Living conditions in the hostels & the move to Townships... As the industries grew on the Rand, so did the number of workers. These workers had to find their own accommodation. Usually they tried to live near their place of work to cut the cost of transport. We have shown how the inner city areas became crowded, and how in the early years the housing of the poor was more or less unplanned, and racially mixed. This section will scribe how the state — formed the Townships....
