- Pioneer of the trade union movement and first general secretary of the Communist Party of South Africa
- Sidney Percival Bunting
- Communist intellectual and organiser, Sydney Bunting was instrumental in the formation and early development of the Communist Party of South Africa.
- Brian Bunting
- Bunting joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) in 1940 at age 20. In 1946 he was elected to the Johannesburg district committee of the Communist Party, and later served on the party's central committee.
- Fred Carneson
- A leader of the Communist Party of South Africa and defendant in the Treason Trial ... He was subsequently charged with sabotage and organizing for the underground Communist Party.
- Dr Yusuf Dadoo
- He was active in the formation of Non European United Front (NEUF) and during this year he attended the South African Communist Party (SACP) conference, where he met with, among others, Moses Kotane. Soon thereafter, in the first half of 1939, Dadoo joined the SACP.

- Bram Fischer
- Lawyer and political activist. Fischer’s political views were unconventional and he joined the Communist Party of South African (CPSA), openly participating in its activities.
- Ruth First
- Journalist, academic and political activist; First helped found the Federation of Progressive Students and served as secretary to the Young Communist League, the Progressive Youth Council and, for a short while, the Johannesburg branch of the CPSA.
- Chris Hani
- Marxist and Political activist, chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, military wing of the African National Congress (ANC) and popular hero. In 1992 Hani stepped down as Chief of Staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe to devote more time to the organisation of the SACP.
- Sam Kahn
- Born in 1911 in Cape Town, he earned an LL.B degree from the University of Cape Town in 1932. He was a lawyer, a leader in the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA), and a Native representative in Parliament.
- Moses Kotane
- General secretary of the Communist Party of South Africa for many years and a prominent figure in the African National Congress.
- JB Marks
- A political activist and trade unionist, in 1928 he joined the African National Congress and became the President of the Transvaal Branch of the ANC ... "That was in the early days when I appeared on the platform of the I.C.U. and of the Communist Party and the League for African Rights"
- Joe Slovo
- Slovo was an active member of the South Africa Communist Party (SACP) from the 1940s and after becoming an advocate at the Johannesburg Bar became well known for his work as a defence lawyer in political trials.
