His Life :
President
of the Cape African National Congress in the late 1950s. Gawe was
born in 1900
in the Herschel district of the Cape, where both his parents were teachers.
He attended St. Matthew's College and later trained as an Anglican
Priest. He joined the African National Congress in 1926 and was later
its national
chaplain. During World War II, he served as chaplain in the Native
Military Corps. Elected to the Cape presidency of the ANC to succeed Z.K. Mathews in 1955, he was later among the defendants in the Treason trial.
He now
lives in Zwelitsha, near King Williamstown.
