INTRODUCTION
The Lives of Courage Campaign was launched by SAHO in 2000 with the aim of compiling a comprehensive list (with biographical profiles) of the thousands of South Africans and international anti-apartheid activists who have played a role in our Freedom Struggle. This has been an ongoing project that has grown dramatically in the last 6 years. This archive has begun filling a gap, at the time this project was launched South Africa's new democratic government had not yet begun compiling a comprehensive list of Freedom Struggle activists and casualties.
The Lives of Courage Campaign has involved South Africans, and in particular young school students, in assisting us with the compilation of a detailed online register to honor all those South Africans who played a significant role in the struggle.
We would like this archive to continue growing; therefore we are inviting you to help us with biographical details, letters, diaries, articles and photographs of those South Africans. These can be people in your family or community. People who played a significant role in the struggle that were possibly banned, banished, executed, imprisoned or killed in action.
The campaign
The campaign was launched by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, on behalf of the deputy president on 30 August in Durban. The minister of Education attended, as well as a speaker of parliament and other members of the provincial government veterans associations.
The campaign included:
1. A National schools competition.
2. Meetings and workshops with veterans to involve them in the compilation of their own life stories and stories about others on our website.
3. Building a network of institutions, academics and students to help with the researching and compilation of the information.
Schools & community participation
The National schools competition focuses on oral history and on telling the story of one’s community. SAHO has published oral history ‘help files’ for schools, as well as the schools history curriculum for Grades 4-12. The competition, aptly named, the Albert Luthuli Young Historians Prize, has been an annual event since the launching of this campaign (in partnership with the DOE). Currently:
Currently the SAHO team is extending this project to include a rich history and archive of the Freedom Struggle. This project includes; timelines, campaigns and events, additional biographies, liberation organizations and their histories, galleries and much more. We are getting experts in the field to assist with the writing of this history. The Freedom Struggle project will be the largest of its kind.
