Derrick Vusimusi Nxumalo was born in 1962 in Dumisa, Natal. Nxumalo passed Standard VIII at Phindavela High School. He received no formal art training. He worked as a waiter in a private hotel in Scottburgh and as a gardener on the Berea in Durban. He first went to the African Art Centre, Durban in 1985 where he received encouragement from Jo Thorpe for his felttip pen drawings on paper. In mid-1986 he started a two-year contract as a miner on Vaal Reef Gold Mines. In July 1988 he completed his contract and returned to his home in Dumisa. He has received various commissions.
