Edgar Arthur Deane was born in 1908. He became national secretary of the Coloured Furniture Workers' Union and a politician, serving for a period on the Cape Town City Council. Deane became the chairman of the South African Coloured People's Organisation in the 1950s. In 1962 he attended an international labor conference in Geneva. He was convicted of embezzling trade union funds in 1973.
