Fanie de Villiers was born on the 13th October 1964 in Vereeniging. In 1985 he started playing for the Northern Transvaal cricket team and in the 1992/93 cricket season he started his career for the South African team, playing in One Day Internationals. In the next season he also made his Test début as a right-arm fast-medium bowler. In 1989 and 1995 he was selected South African Cricket Annual Cricketer of the Year. ‘Vinnige Fanie’, as De Villiers is popularly known among cricket fans, retired in 1998, and has since worked as a cricket commentator.
