Professor “Pro” Bacela was born in Mlungisi, Queenstown, Eastern Province (now Eastern Cape) on 21 September 1964. His father was a migrant worker who worked in Johannesburg travelling back in December to visit his family. His mother worked in Cape Town as a domestic servant, and she also returned to visit her family in December. Thus, Bacela and his two brothers and three sisters stayed with his uncle who was employed by the Queenstown municipality.
