Khoza moved to Johannesburg in search of employment in 1983. He joined Excludex furniture manufacturers in the same year and worked as a sales person in the company until 1985. During this period he became involved in the Metal and Allied Workers Union (Mawu). By 1986 Khoza had joined SA Perm as a clerk, later to be promoted to a position of promotion officer, where he was responsible for public as well as in-house promotions. In 1989 Khoza was asked to join labour consultants, Brentwood Associates, as a training officer, specialising in communication skills. After a year he left to become a full-time organiser for Inkatha.
