All the farmers at the Cape were obliged to sell their fresh produce to the VOC, who would provide passing trade ships with enough fresh food stores to travel between Europe and the East. The fact that Van der Stel owned an enormous property, which he cultivated using the VOC\'s resources, gave him an unfair advantage over other farmers in the area. This situation led to conflict between Van der Stel and the other Dutch farmers, or free burghers.
