Situated in Jacob Mare Street and named after Melrose Abbey in Scotland, the house was originally completed in 1886 and owned by George Heys. The Treaty of Vereeniging was signed here on 31 May 1902. This house was occupied by the British during the war but eventually taken over by the Pretoria Municipality in 1968. It was declared a National Monument in 17 May 1971. Today Melrose House has temporary exhibitions, antique fairs, workshops for adults and children and a tea garden.
