What was the world like around 1600?

In this section, we will look at large empires and civilisations that existed in the world in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, at more or less the same time as Great Zimbabwe - namely the Songhay in Africa, the Ming in China, and the Moghuls in India.

We will also look briefly at what was going on in Europe at the same time. At this time in history, Europe was not very powerful or influential outside its borders. But, just a few hundred years later, in the mid-1800s, European countries become very powerful in many parts of the world. The influence that European colonisation had on the world is still with us today.
