Andries Hendrik Potgieter, the leader of a Voortrekker group which he led during the battle of Vegkop when attacked by the Matabele (Ndebele), was born in the Graaff-Reinet district in the Cape Colony. He fought in the Fourth and Fifth Frontier Wars and later was the founder of Potchefstroom, the first town founded north of the Vaal River.
