14 December 1999
Clarence Mlokoti, co-founder and chairman of Kaizer Chiefs football club, was shot dead by hijackers while trying to take his car in Pimville, Soweto. The highjacking took place on Tuesday night while Mlokoti was waiting for his wife and daughter to come back from their friend's house. While returning from the house they were approached by two men who demanded the car keys. When the robbers found Mlokoti in the car, one of them shot him three times. He was rushed to Lesedi clinic where he died. Mlokoti's death, which came at the time when South Africa was bidding to host the 2006 World Cup, was used to support the critics of the South African bid to argue that its high rate of violent crimes made it unsuitable to become a host. Mlokoti was buried in his hometown of Tsomo, Umtata (now Mthatha).
