21 September 1988
The government prohibited an anti-apartheid conference organised by COSATU in Cape Town, which aimed to include delegates from a broad spectrum of anti-apartheid organisations, and restricted its organisers for more than ten days. The seven restricted included Chris Ndodebandla Dlamini*, first vice president of COSATU, Fholisani Sydney Mufamadi, assistant general secretary and Donsie Khumalo, regional secretary. In terms of the restriction orders the three named officials could not leave their respective homes or magisterial districts from 6pm on 21 September to 6am on 3 October. Many trade unionists were detained during the period 1988 to the end of 1989, particularly because of protests against the Labour Relations Amendment Bill. * One source mentions that the restriction was in 1986, but two sources confirm the year 1988.
