19 September 1985
Two White men, Schalk Burger and George Scheepers, were sentenced in Klerksdorp to be hanged to death for the rape of a Black woman, Ginny Gotsoine in February 1985. Two other White men in the same case were found guilty of rape. All four pleaded not guilty, even though, there was DNA evidence that proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they did it. Most importantly, witnesses caught these four rapists and murderers in the act. This case led to an outcry throughout the country that the life of a Black person was cheap and Whites could do as much as they please since they had the backing of the law. Adding more woes to this issue was the figures reported on the, " The Times " and released by Parliament that since 1984, 115 people were hanged, two of who were White people. 94 Black people had been executed between 1982 and 1984 for crimes of violence against Whites, while one White man had been executed for violence against Blacks.
